School outline




The 8th International Mass Spectrometry School is a six day school aimed to give a high level education in fundamentals, advances, instrumentation, and applications of mass spectrometry to graduate, PhD and post-doc students, and others working in industries and in different institutions in the areas of chemistry, biosciences, food, environment, and medicine.

The school joins together participants from academia, public and private research centers and industry, and it is a useful occasion for allowing meeting of students and tutors coming from different countries and for creating new links and networking.

     Mass spectrometry: overview & perspectives      Ionization techniques      Ambient mass spectrometry      Analyzers: in-time and in-space ion separation      High resolution mass spectrometry      Ion mobility      AI and machine learning
    DIA & DDA methods. Target & untarget analysis      MS Imaging      Big data      Complex mixture analysis      Applications in food, doping, forensics, omics sciences, …      Innovation in instrumentation and methodologies

The school is organized in:
a) Tutorial lectures aimed at presenting theory, fundamentals, instrumentation and applications of mass spectrometry given by an international team of lecturers;
b) Poster sessions. Participants are encouraged to present a poster on their own research activity. Posters will be exhibited during the full period of the school to give the opportunity to those attending the school to go through;
c) Selected flash orals. Selected posters will be presented as flash oral communications;
d) Exercises with the active participation of students in solving some exercises on matters presented in the lectures;
e) Problem solving in which students present to other students and tutors problems encountered in their scientific activity receiving suggestions on how to try to solve them.
f) Social program: • Welcome party; • excursion to the beach; • Gala Dinner; • students leave their mark!

The IMSS2027 is held in Alghero, one of the most important city of Sardinia located in its Northern part.
The city, founded in the 11th century, has a soul consisting of a millenary history, culture, nature, beach tourism, charmed by the views of its historical center with old walls and watchtowers.

VISA REQUIREMENTS

Depending on their citizenship, country of long-term residence, and the duration and reasons for their staying, participants can need a visa to enter Italy.
Please visit the website of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy at https://vistoperitalia.esteri.it/ees?lang=en_US
It is each participant's responsibility to obtain a Visa to enter Italy.
However, School Secretariat can send documentation that may be included in visa application by the participants. The documentation may include Letter of Acceptance to participate to the imss 2027.

ECTS Credits

ECTS credits

The 8th IMSS will give ECTS credits to students who passed the examination test.
According to the Italian rules, 1 ECTS credit = 25 working hours. This conversion can change depending of the country.
By considering hours spent in the class, preparation and homework hours, a participant could be eligible for 1.5 ECTS credits.
The ECTS credits will be reported in the final Certificate of Attendance with the Exam outcome (pass/fail and grade (A (excellent) ÷ E (sufficient))) together with the actual number of the working hours, so to facilitate conversions in different countries.

Nico Nibbering Student Travel Awards

The International Mass Spectrometry Foundation and the Organizing Committee of the International Mass Spectrometry School (IMSS 2027) invite applications for the Nico Nibbering Travel Awards to support student participation in the 8th IMSS.
Prof. Nibbering was a passionate advocate for young scientists and supported the education and career-development of mass spectrometrists from many countries around the world through his mentorship and the delivery of education and workshop programs.
The Nico Nibbering Student Travel Awards serve to honor his many contributions to international mass spectrometry and build on his legacy of supporting young scientists in this field.

Awards for the BEST POSTER, BEST ORAL and BEST MS SOLVER will be assigned.


Registration

Registration to IMSS 2027 consists of two steps:

  1. Fill and send registration form
  2. Send your CV declaring your status (student or other) through the CV submission form

Registrations will be considered only if completed by the CV submission.

For a profitable and fruitful learning, the number of students is limited to 80.

Registration fee

The registration fee is

€ 450,00 Ph.D. and PostDoc students, research fellows

€ 700,00 others

All registration fees are exempt IVA (VAT) according to the Italian D.P.R. N. 633/72, art. 4 and subsequent amendments.

It includes:
  • Participation to the school
  • Copy of the slides presented at the lessons
  • Certificate of attendance
  • Buffet lunches (Mon-Thu), Social dinner, coffee breaks
  • Excursion

Admission to the school and payment details
The eventual admission to the school together with payment details will be notified a few days after the registration.
Admission to the IMSS 2027 will be done evaluating candidate CV, status and year of birth.

Abstract submission
Participants are encouraged to present an abstract for a poster communication on their own research activity.
Details for abstract submission will be given to confirmed participants in June 2027.
Selected posters will be presented as flash oral communications.

Cancellations and Refunds
All cancellations made in writing and received by the Organizing Secretariat by July 15, 2027 will be eligible for a full refund minus a € 50 administration fee.
No refunds will be issued for cancellations received on or after July 15, 2027 or for no-show.
